Akaal Primary School safe haven survey

Derby City Council has been awarded further funding from Active Travel England to trial another School Safe Haven Zone.

School Safe Havens are designed to improve the experiences of a school’s pupils, staff, visitors, and neighbours alike at the start and end of the school day.

There are a number of benefits including:

• removal of congestion and reduction in emissions outside the school gates
• reduced instances of dangerous driving, parking and turning outside schools at times of day when many children and families are present
• fewer road safety issues and improved perceptions of road safety
• increased levels of walking, wheeling and cycling to school
• enhanced opportunities for social interaction
• improved physical and mental health amongst pupils
• increased pupil independence
• developing early active travel habits which can be carried into later life

What are our proposals?

Following feedback from the one-day trials and from discussions with Local Councillors, Neighbourhood Officers and school representatives we have put together a proposal to trial an experimental timed traffic restriction on Grange Avenue. This would see a temporary pedestrian and cycle zone on Grange Avenue, that will operate at the start and the end of the school day.

The survey is open for 12 weeks and closes at midnight on Friday 9 October 2026.

What happens next?

We will analyse the feedback you give and determine next steps for the trial. If the trial is successful, consideration will then be given to making the scheme permanent. This type of restriction could be enforced using a Traffic Enforcement camera should it be necessary.
