Allestree Rewilding
Derby City Council is working with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the University of Derby on a rewilding project for Allestree Park. A 12 week consultation is taking place with the community to develop the plans for what would be the first large-scale urban rewilding project in the UK.
Rewilding Allestree Park could bring the city wide-ranging benefits; you can read our recent press release which provides more information on why rewilding is good for us and our planet. Through rewilding, nature’s recovery in Derby would be supported by providing more space for wildlife-rich habitats and potential species reintroductions. It would also help the Council meet its carbon reduction targets by increasing Derby’s carbon storage capacity. Rewilding would also give Derby a “Natural Health Service” providing more opportunities for residents to improve their wellbeing by connecting with nature-rich greenspace.
We are looking for the views of residents in Derby and those who visit Allestree Park before we make any final decisions.
How can you have your say?
You can take part in various ways through our online survey which can be completed anonymously or take part in one of the quick polls.
Why not give some of your ideas around rewilding or share suggestions? To do this use the ‘Our Ideas’ tab below, also take part in the forums or provide a story. When providing feedback on the ideas, forums or stories you will be asked to provide your email address and select a screen name. Please note these are moderated so any rude or offensive comments will not be published.

Over the 12 week consultation period we will be hosting and attending events. Look out for details of these, where you can come along and talk to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Parks Team face to face.

At Allestree Park we are looking to run sessions for adults too – ones that help you get closer to nature so you can experience all the wild wellbeing benefits nature brings to physical health and mental wellbeing.

Green space for city community groups
Access to natural green space for city youth groups to help with the rewilding initially but then with maintaining the space afterwards. Youth clubs, Scouts and guides could all be given the opportunity to get involved, learn about nature, help the local community and have an investment in the project and a pride in the space.

I love the idea of making the park a wild area for wildlife and walks, but including outdoor activities will make it an invaluable resource.

Restore what has been lost to secure the future
Wildflower meadows and ponds, since the second world war 97 percent of wildflower meadows have been lost, our food supplies rely on pollinators, pollinators need wildflowers for nectar when the brief flowering season of our food plants is over, in addition old fashioned flowery hay meadows are stunningly beautiful. The UK has also lost ponds at an alarming rate, the pleasure and excitement for children seeing frogspawn, then tadpoles and their development into frogs is beyond compare and there is far, far more life than that which comes with ponds. Sir David Attenborough recently spelt it out, the best way to fight climate change is with biodiversity, flowery meadows and ponds are some of the quickest ways to boost biodiversity, they also lock up more carbon and quicker than planting trees, they also lock the carbon into the ground, timber eventually releases it back to the atmosphere. We act now or condemn our children and grandchildren to a bleak future.

Community orchard , nut and fruit trees .Bramble and nettle thickets .Pond for amphibians No mountain bikes-incompatible.Control dog areas.
