The character of Derby is in large part defined by its remarkable and internationally recognised heritage.

We value the historic environment not just for its own sake but also for its role in boosting civic pride and encouraging people to visit Derby. We also recognise its potential as a significant economic asset that can support the economic health of the city centre and play an important role in attracting new investment.

However, some historic parts of the city centre have suffered from reduced footfall and the loss of key businesses. The Vision will need to address this through a series of proactive measures that will support local businesses and improve the physical environment of the historic core.

Included within this theme:

  • The importance of heritage
  • The historic core
  • Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
  • Balancing priorities
