The city centre will continue to be the main shopping destination in Derby and an attraction of sub-regional importance.

At the moment though, it has too much floorspace and this is contributing to high rates of vacancies and a general air of decline.

We therefore need to focus shopping activity into a more concentrated area to create better vibrancy and encourage a more diverse range of uses. Image of Clifton Arcade, Bristol

We also need to define clearer, complementary roles for different shopping areas, so that they support each other rather than directly competing.

Within this theme:

  • Shopping and the city centre
  • The Derbion Centre
  • Derby Market Hall
  • Diversifying and concentrating the retail core
  • Developing visions for parts of the city centre
  • Supporting businesses
  • The early evening and night-time economy

The city centre has too much retail floorspace so we need to focus shopping activity into a more concentrated area to create better vibrancy and encourage a more diverse range of uses.

We have provided some ideas for what the role and identity could be for different areas in the Ambition document.

You can place a pin marker onto the map and add your comments to tell us;

  • if you think there are any areas that could be removed from the definition of the retail core.
  • if you agree with our ideas for the role and identity of different character areas.
  • if you have different ideas.
