Thank you to everyone who completed the Derby Private Renters’ survey. The survey ran from 31 January to 23 March 2022 with 169 tenants submitting responses. It is the first stage of a joint venture between Derby City Council and Generation Rent, a national charity which campaigns to make renting in the private sector fair, safe and secure. Through this project the Council hopes to gain a better understanding of the issues private renters face when renting in Derby; if tenants are aware of their rights and responsibilities and how they resolve issues with their landlords and letting agents. It will also help the Council to identify how best to communicate and engage with private renters in the future.

This project with Generation Rent will build on the work currently being undertaken in collaboration with Derby City Council’s Public Health Team to better understand the impact that poor quality housing can have on people renting in the private sector.

The next steps

A report based on the survey responses will be compiled and the Council will also be hosting focus groups with Generation Rent in April and May 2022. This will give private sector tenants the opportunity to discuss their experiences in more detail and help to gain an in-depth picture of Derby’s private rental market from the tenants’ perspective.

If you are renting privately in Derby and would like the opportunity to take part in these focus groups, please email Housing.Strategy@derby.gov.uk.

The results of the survey and focus groups will be invaluable in giving Derby’s private sector tenants a chance to have their say and to help shape Council initiatives that will support them.
