Derby City Council has been awarded further funding from Active Travel England to trial another four Schools as Safe Havens. School Safe Havens address some of the long standing traffic issues that occur at the start and end of the school day as well as promoting active travel for trips to schools and improving air quality at the school gates.
We invited primary schools across the city to express an interest in trialling road closures and join the existing School Safe Havens in the city, St Alban's RC Academy was successful as one of the four trial schools.
What are the proposals?
Following consultation with local residents, parents, statutory consultees and discussions with stakeholders, the decision was made to continue with the School Safe Haven proposal, with a slight modification to the restriction times.
The Zone will be operational from Monday 4th March 2024 and will be introduced on an experimental basis first. This means the new restriction will be temporary for a maximum period of 18 months before deciding whether it should be permanent. A six-month period of public consultation will be undertaken as part of this process and will start on Monday 4th March 2024 when the Zone is introduced. Details of how to object and engage in the consultation will be made available as regulations require by street notice and public advertisement.
TheZone will covertwo streets;the first will cover Ismay Road from it junction with Chaddesden Lane and the second will cover Oakleigh Avenue Eastwards from its junction with Reginald Road South – to include Newstead Avenue, Lenton Avenue and Lea Drive.
The restriction will be operational term time only, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 9:00am in the morning and from 2:45pm to 3:45pm in the afternoon.
Who can apply for an exemption?
Residents and local businesses who have a vehicle or vehicles registered to an address located within a School Safe Haven Zone can apply for an exemption. The exemption will give a legal right to drive the registered vehicle into the Zone during the scheme's operating times. Special exemptions will also be available for blue badge holders requiring access to the Zone and carers for vulnerable residents living within the Zone.
Further information for those eligible for permits will be sent directly to local residents and the same information provided to St Alban's RC Academy for them to pass on to parents/guardians. This will include details on how to apply and information on what documentation to submit.
