As an urban environment, 13% of Derby city is formally designated as parks, open spaces and allotments managed by the Council. This includes ten Local Nature Reserves, which include calcareous wildflower banks, acid grasslands and hay meadows. The river Derwent runs through the heart of the city creating a green corridor and providing a vital connection between many of the green spaces, to the benefit of wildlife and people.

The city aims to expand its ability to tackle air and noise pollution, whilst removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, (known as carbon sequestration), by increasing Derby’s tree canopy cover, letting grass and wildflowers grow and improving soil quality, which enables plants and micro-organisations to absorb and store greenhouse gases.
