Using investment from the Premier League, The FA and the Government through Sport England, the PlayZones Programme aims to engage with local communities across the country to create outstanding sports and activity spaces and tackle inequalities in participation.

This is an exciting new project renovating old Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) into PlayZones and building new PlayZones from scratch. This project aims to tackle inequalities in physical activity and provide access to high-quality community facilities in local, accessible spaces.

We recently consulted to find out how people felt about these proposals and learn what could be considered to make it work for local areas. Thank you to every one that gave their feedback.

Update – May 2024

Following the review of the consultations, next steps have been agreed for each site. Two sites have been approved to move forward to the next stage. A planning application will be submitted to start a formal consultation process with both public and statutory consultees. The other two sites will not be moving forward as part of the PlayZone programme.

Sunnyhill Recreation Ground also known as Caxton Park

  • Not to progress as a PlayZone but to ensure that the findings and ambitions from the community engagement and consultation are included in locality plans as improvements and developments to parks and open spaces in the area.

  • This approach will allow for the findings and ambitions of the community engagement work to still support improvements to sites to create safe and inclusive community assets

Dale Road Park

  • Planning application to be submitted.

  • The process from the Football Foundation is that planning permission is to be applied for and granted before a grant application can be submitted to ensure that cost certainty for a project has been determined. 

  • A formal planning application, through the development control process, is to pro-actively ensure that the pattern and nature of a proposed development falls within local policies and that any and all additional information is included such as Flood Risk Assessments and Bat Surveys.  

  • A formal planning application means that public can responded to a formal consultation and statutory consultees will be consulted to provide a specialist input into a proposed development. This input will provide objective specialist knowledge in areas that have been raised as a concern from the informal consultation including Derbyshire Constabulary, Environmental Health, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Environment Agency, Sport England and DCC service area.
