Markeaton Crematorium has been an important part of Derby life for almost seven decades, serving residents at moments of great personal significance. We want to ensure that our city continues to have a place of dignity and respect that supports people when they need it most.
It is recognised that our existing facility needs significant development to remain operational, and to meet modern expectations. Following an investment appraisal, it was concluded that building a new crematorium represents better value for money than refurbishing the existing facility to the required standard. By working together with our partners and residents, we will create a modern and sustainable crematorium that can serve Derby for many years to come.
Creating a new crematorium is about more than replacing an ageing building. It is about providing a service that supports families and loved ones when they need it most. Our ambition is to build a space that reflects dignity and respect, while offering modern, accessible, and sustainable facilities that meet the needs of our whole community.
The development of a new crematorium will aim to provide:
Up-to-date facilities that meet modern standards.
Improved accessibility for all visitors.
More environmentally friendly facilities that support the Council’s Net Zero goals.
Improved car parking provision.
Multi-faith facilities suitable for a range of beliefs and traditions.
Further opportunities for memorial provision.
Two service halls to accommodate different sizes and styles of service.
The new crematorium is to be built on land behind the existing crematorium, with a connection between the two sites being maintained. All memorials, gardens, and ash scattering areas on the original site will be protected and maintained, but the old crematorium building will be demolished. The stained glass memorial windows in the large chapel will be transferred to the new site as a protected installation.
The existing crematorium will remain in use until the new crematorium is complete.
We have spoken with many of you before and you have helped us to develop our design brief. We included much of what you told us. We are now in a position to show you the plans that our architect has drawn up for the new crematorium and would like to know what you think. We would also like you to check that we've not missed anything important whilst we still have chance to change. We're also asking you about next stage things we should consider such as technology as well as your needs within the crematorium.
