School term dates for 2027-2030

Consultation on term dates last took place in the academic year 2024/25, but in light of the proposed boundary changes from 2028 as a result of Local Government Reorganisation, further consultation is taking place.

School terms and holiday dates are set by the council each year in consultation with parents, headteachers, governing bodies, neighbouring LAs, professional associations, Diocesan Boards of Education, FE Colleges, HE Universities, Trade Unions and any other interested stakeholder.

Councils need to set the school term dates for maintained schools, they must be open to pupils for 190 days in an academic year and 195 days for teachers.

Foundation, trust, voluntary aided schools and academies are responsible for setting their own holiday dates and so individual schools, which are not maintained by the local authority may choose to follow a pattern and/or specific dates that do not match those set by Derby City Council.

When setting proposed dates we have, where possible, tried to take account of dates/patterns already set by our local authority neighbours.

Given the proposed boundary changes from 2028 under Local Government Reorganisation, the most appropriate recommendation currently is that Derby City term dates continue to mirror Derbyshire County Council term dates. After the Local Government Reorganisation, further consultation will be carried out to set the dates or the academic year 2030/31.
